This month, I would like to concentrate my message on some of the measures you can take to prevent you from becoming a victim of crime.
Identity theft sounds innocuous, but can have long term effects on individuals’ ability to obtain future credit. Offenders will use a variety of means to gather basic information about you (name, address, phone number etc) and then use this to try to gather extra information – possibly by phoning you up, pretending to be from a bank or computer company, or going through rubbish in your wheelie bin for un-shredded documentation etc. They will then use this additional information to apply for things such as financial loans or home delivery shopping, which they will intercept before it reaches your door. Please treat your personal information with the same care that you take of your credit cards or cheque books – destroy or shred any paperwork with such details and do not divulge personal information to unsolicited callers.

A lottery scam takes place when criminals pretend that you have won a prize, often a lottery. The people most likely to fall victim to this tend to be over the age of 60 (although younger people do fall victim too) – but we know that it is often close family members of victims who spot the tell-tale signs of the fraud.

The Council’s Waste and Recycling collection service is being affected by the current adverse weather conditions. Whilst scheduled collections will continue to be made, the high level of winds may cause spillages and cause containers to be blown.

Fraudsters are targeting people to list items on their behalf on popular online auction sites. The scam involves a job offer to sell desirable items at below market value and receive money from any potential buyers. The ‘work from home’ job will usually require retaining 10% of the money received as a “salary” and fraudsters will ask that the remaining funds are sent to them via bank transfer or money transfer.

There has been a spate of thefts of metal farm gates in the Whitchuch and Wem areas of Shropshire. Overnight 19th to 20th January 2015 a total of 12 gates were stolen from fields in this area.
A dark coloured Ford Transit type pickup, with writing on the side, was spotted in the area carrying what appeared to be gates during the early hours of the morning.
Similar thefts have taken place in the Wrexham and Mold areas in the last few weeks.
The above areas are close to the Cheshire border.
Please report all suspicious activity.
